Kickstarter Roundup: Week of 02 Dec 2013

This week’s crop of Kickstarter ain’t bad at all. 🙂 Week of 02 Dec 2013!

First up is well… Not exactly a miniature game. But hey, it’s Alessio’s game (world)! I suppose as a long time war gamer I have to pitch a long time game designer.. Well actually no. It’s more because you can get mini chess pieces:

Looks quite nice and if you really want you can get multiple sets to beef up an army… Wonder if they come painted?

Next is something a friend pointed out to me and probably will kill me, then resurrect me as a Zombie if I don’t talk about it. 🙂

The mat, not the minis.

It’s an interesting concept, take those sheer mousepad, upsize them severely, and print some terrain images on them. And the company that is doing this KS is fairly reputable, so the risks are lower. Still, a bit pricy, especially shipping (not their fault).

I personally will have to think long and hard about this one, and even then, likelihood is that I’d pass. It’s not that it’s a bad quality product; it’s just that for me, terrain for wargaming should be 3D.. even minor undulations in the ground adds up to the experience. Of course, there are games like Herocliks and the old DDM/ SWM that straddle in-between, so with a bit of work this can work out well for them.

Next is also something I can’t use, mostly because I don’t use an airbrush. Stencils!

It’s always useful to have these things around, though I think the thickness they are using is a bit thick. It can be quite useful if you are using an airbrush — paintbrush needs stencils that are thinner and more flexible. If you have a need, this looks to be relatively low risk and can be potentially fast turnaround.

And if you’re into card games, as in poker cards… this one may be for you.

Yes. That’s right. Carbon Fiber playing cards. Talk about strange material. I suppose building card buildings from these would be a bit easier to have load on them.. potentially you can build higher.

Still most of us would actually use poker cards to play card games. I’m strangely tempted by this, just to have a deck that.. well, is carbon fiber. Yeah I’m strange that way.

Lastly, there’s this new mini KS. It actually looks quite interesting and is from Down Under, so shipping doesn’t look too terrible. Skirmish, so smaller footprint, and the minis and concept art do look good. I’ll keep an eye on this one, might get into it. Then again, I have way too many rulebooks and way too little time….

So that’s it for this week. I’m thinking of doing a 2013 lookback to see how the KS that I fished out had performed.. probably over Christmas.
