BAM: 1/48 and 1/56 Vehicle Comparison

IMG_0209.JPG
Interest in BAM picked up in my local area and I was asked a few times how is the 1/48 and 1/56 vehicles comparison. I’ve always thought I had a comparison pic somewhere but as it turns out… No I didn’t. So I might as well get that out of the way…

BAM: 1/56 Warlord Games Cromwell

IMG_0134.JPG

So I recently picked up a Warlord Games Cromwell, which is 1/56 scale. I honestly prefer 1/48 scale more, that’s a nice size and feels right next to 28mm infantry, but Tamiya 1/48 Cromwell is rare and I’m basically just trying this kit out to see how it works out.

Short form? It’s not terribad. But I have issues with it. Warning: Long article.

BAM: 1/48 Lysander, In Progress

So yeah. I’m still alive. Work is on the upswing but the real reason I’m not posting as much is that I’m taking a module in school that is being unreasonable in workload. It got so frustrating about the hideous amount of time it soaked up, that I just had to get one kit done just to blow off steam. So you get this: BAM: 1/48 Lysander, In Progress:

I picked this up at a charity auction a few months back, because it’s in 1/48 and I wanted one for an objective marker for BAM. This kit came out 20 years ago, for the then 50th anniversary of D-Day. Frankly, this kit didn’t age well.

Relic Knights Black Diamond Starter

20140805-142000-51600967.jpg

Just a quick update. Just put together the Relic Knights Black Diamond starter I got from retail, plus Sophia Drake. Modded Sophia a bit.

Didn’t like the “plastic” these came in.

Work was crazy last few months and I was working on another project. Need to find time to blog more.

Imperial Knight

So yeah. 3 months passed since “I’m not dead yet”. Sigh. Combination of work, school and life just decided to beat me senseless.

Not that I didn’t get hobby stuff done, of course. I picked up an Imperial Knight when it first came out.. well actually I picked up a damaged Imperial Knight at a discount and continued to further damage.. eh. Convert it. Since I took some pics along the way, you guys get to see what insanity goes through my head.

Such as the somewhat over-firepowered Knight on the left…

Warning: Pic heavy after the jump.

A New Beginning…

Well actually not so much a new beginning, but new enough for this blog. 😉

With my Brits “officially” finished — we all know armies are never finished, but at least I hit a target… — I’ve since started on my Germans. I’ve been busy over the last three weeks, but I’ve more or less put together the minimum minis needed:

A Leutnant 2 squads of 5 Landsers each, with a MG-34 in each squad. Works out to be 190 points, still short of my target of 250 points before starting to paint. That’ll give me two base squads of 8 Landsers each.

Wargames Factory’s Equal Opportunity Survivors

Well something came in the mail today…

Picked up Wargames Factory’s Dark Future Survivors line, both male and female, during their Black Friday sale. Not that I don’t want to support the LGS, but on Black Fridays they can’t match the pricing…

Anyhow, my intention is to use them as cultists for 40k. 60 cultists plus the traditional GW cultists (around 20~30) should put a sizeable presence on board, and also a slightly different look to the usual GW hooded and scarred cultists. Better IMO to have civilians that looks like a mob of everyday civilians.. just armed to the teeth. And having females in the crowd makes it look even more.. “real”. GW does seem to have this problem about human females not existing outside of very narrow ranges.

Angels in the Mail: Puppets War Steam Wing Pack

So a package came in the mail and I picked it up this morning — I actually was wondering what’s in it since I couldn’t remember getting anything. Turns out that I shopped at Puppets War and picked up their Steam Wing Pack. They took a bit of time to fulfil the order, so I actually forgot about it.

I got these to refit my Adepta Sororitas Seraphim specifically, so I slapped one on a spare Seraphim Superior:

BAM: And It’s a Wrap, Folks! (Yeah, right.)

So, that Brit army I keep wailing on? Yeah it’s pretty done. The last step was basing, and for some stupid reasons I kept forgetting where my flock is. Ended up digging quite hard for the stuff and found a tub of Army Builder Grass Green. Like these as they aren’t your usual flock, more like thick sawdust which has a look that appeals to me. Anyways…

20130923-144230.jpgFirefly with my “advancing” squad. Casual buggers at the back.. Well the size difference between the Tamiya and the Warlord BAM miniatures really show up here. Warlords being more thick-headed. 🙂

BAM: Sherman Firefly

So yeah, I’ve been working on the Sherman Firefly. More or less finished, just need to do a bit of weathering.

The Firefly paints up quite nicely, not having too many details on the outer hull that requires attention. Quite like the last pic.. 17 pdr does have a nice stretch to it. There is a bit of weathering on the Firefly, but as it turns out Vallejo Panzer Aces Dark Mud and Vallejo Russian Uniform are so close that you have to squint in order to see the differences. I’d have to go over it with not so Dark Mud later.

Other than that, there’s a bit of Sepia wash done to bring out the finer details, so not much weathering. No, I’m not going to do the half-barrel camo that 17 pdrs often are depicted in… That’s overdone already.
20130919-180422.jpg
Not saying that it was all smooth going.. Even with only 3 bogies a side, that still adds up to twelve road wheels to do. It’s just kind of monotonous to work through those.
20130919-180440.jpg
The track gave me some issues. The long sections were fine, although the top section needed a ruler to keep it down on the return rollers while the plastic cement did its work. The curvature around the drive sprocket and the idler wheel comprises of individual links though, and that was annoying to work with. The drive sprocket in particular.. The links could pivot down and the. You suddenly end up without a proper contact point for the next link. I ended up ramming a metal rod — actually a reamer — in to keep the link up while the cement cured.

Overall I liked the assembly of the Sherman Firefly and the painting wasn’t too bad either. It was just a few items that made it a bit more annoying. I won’t want to put together another Sherman in the near future, but they are rather fun kits to work with.
